It was in Shibadong Village that President Xi Jinping first proposed the idea of "targeted poverty alleviation." At the time, the village was one of the poorest areas in China.
Few households had a TV set, that's why many villagers did not recognize the president initially.
One villager who had seen Xi on TV was surprised that he had come to the village. Xi asked him: "Am I still the same?"
"How to eliminate poverty in these circumstances? (We should) seek facts from the reality. Guidance and development must reflect the local conditions. This is targeted poverty alleviation."
"It was our mentality that changed first. We used to be poor. Now we have left poverty behind."
"People in Shibadong used to feel inferior to others. Now we are very proud."
